This past week found your outdoor scribe doing some rather mundane things such as yard work, vegetable gardening and repairs around the old cabin. Oh, I also wrapped up a couple of magazine articles. I always enjoy sharing my adventures with all of you in this column but to be perfectly honest, not nearly as much as my ‘field work’ hunting and fishing which is an iatrical part of any good outdoor column. If you’re like me, you much prefer reading about an adventure that you can also partake.

Twenty students have successfully completed the course requirements for the 2025-2026 ESL Course through the Riter C. Hulsey Public Library WINGS Adult Education Program.

editor@terrelltribune.com The Terrell City Council swore in their newest council member on Tuesday, May 5 as Jorge Vargas took his oath of office. Vargas takes over District 3 for Mayrani Velazquez, who announced earlier this year her intention to not seek re-election.

Terrell ISD hosted their Annual Pastors’ Luncheon at the Jamie Foxx Performing Arts Center on May 7. Pastors, ministers and other faith leaders from across our community gathered to enjoy a complimentary lunch and connected over ways we can continue supporting and uplifting our students and families together.

City of Terrell maintenance crews were working on a fire hydrant near Mira Pl. on the afternoon of April 27 when Crew Leader Sam Karnes took a break to get some water. At some point, Karnes began choking on a plastic ring from his water bottle. When Maintenance Worker Jonathan Guinn, who has a military background and training, saw Sam was struggling to breathe, he jumped off the back of the truck and began giving Sam the Heimlich maneuver. The maneuver was successful at dislodging the plastic ring, allowing Sam to breathe again. Jonathan's quick thinking was able to save the life of his fellow crew member. Terrell Police Chief Arley Sansom introduced the four newest officers to the department at the May 5 Terrell City Council meeting. Chief Sansom introduced Officers Ethan Wagner and Kimberly Avalos, who both graduated from the police academy on May 4 and two lateral transfers, Juan Santoyo from Dallas College PD and Taylor Huddle from Kaufman PD.

Members of the Terrell City Council and the Terrell Kiwanis Club recognized K-Kids and their sponsors during the May 5 city council meeting. The club members were honored with a City of Terrell logo cookie, a challenge coin and a personal note from Mayor Rick Carmona thanking them for their ongoing support of the council.

May 9: Victory in Europe Celebration from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Kaufman County Commissioners' Court voted May 5 to apply to the Texas Indigent Defense Commission in Austin to fund an assistant indigent defense coordinator position, which Project Manager Pam Corder said is needed because 'as our county grew,' that department 'was falling behind' because only one person was managing it.
