Summer Reading Program kicks off June 8

The 13th annual Summer Reading Activities Fair will kick off at 5 p.m., June 8 at the Hulsey Public Library with a ribbon cutting hosted by the Terrell Chamber of Commerce. The fair, featuring more than 30 vendors – the most in the fair’s history - also will include a bounce house for children.

Local COVID infection rate continues decline

As most businesses drop mask requirements across Kaufman County, COVID-19 infections locally continue to decline. The Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) reported 45 estimated active cases of COVID-19 in Kaufman County as of June 1, a figure far below the infection levels seen earlier this year.

County to receive $26 million to invest in preparedness

In a year of pandemic, freak winter cold and near catastrophic grid failure, Kaufman County commissioners appear poised to make a $26 million investment in preparedness. Kaufman County stands to receive $26 million from the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) of 2021, which became law in March.

Humane Society of NT bids to operate pet adoption center

The Humane Society of North Texas (HSNT) appears to be the lone contender for a contract to operate Kaufman County’s Pet Adoption Center, which is expected to be completed by the end of this year. Recently, the county sought bids on the contract, and the Humane Society of North Texas was the only entity to return a proposal.

New youth librarian has passion for literacy

Morgan Sisk, the newly hired youth services librarian for Hulsey Public Library, joined the staff just in time to head up plans for the library’s popular Summer Reading Program. The youngest of six children, Sisk spent the majority of her life in West Texas.

City, county growth continues at brisk pace

Once again, Terrell is making history with continued unprecedented growth. The U.S. Census Bureau recently released July 2020 population estimates ranking Kaufman County as the second fastest growing county in the state and the third fastest growing county in the nation of cities with a population of 10,000 or more.

‘Anti-lobbying’ bill fails in House

GOP-backed legislation that would have banned taxpayer-funded lobbying in Texas failed to make it out of the state House this week, and Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick is asking Gov. Greg Abbott to call a special legislative session in June to take up the bill and several others deemed as priorities.
