Landowners asked to plow swath along fences

The Kaufman County Office of Emergency Management, in conjunction with the Kaufman County Fire Marshal’s Office and local fire departments, are asking landowners who have the ability to plow a fire break approximately 30 feet wide along your fence lines in an attempt to reduce the spread of wildfires during this extreme wildfire season.

Jury sentences Kaufman man for evading arrest

District Attorney Erleigh Norville Wiley announced that a Kaufman County jury has sentenced Laquoncy Deshard Ellis, 41, to 38 years in the Texas penitentiary. Ellis pled guilty to the 3rd Degree Felony offense of Evading Arrest or Detention with a Vehicle.

Texas General Land Office launches disaster preparedness campaign

The Texas General Land Office announced its public outreach initiative to encourage Texans to be prepared and stay prepared for hurricane season, which began Wednesday, June 1 and runs through November 30, 2022. The preparedness campaign includes a video advertisement series titled, “Don’t Ignore Your Risk”, a bilingual multi-media, multi-platform campaign urging Texans to take time now to know their risk, purchase flood insurance, protect their home, safeguard documents, and prepare emergency supplies and an evacuation route.

Court opts to extend disaster declaration

The Kaufman County Commissioners Court reached arguably the busiest portion of its yearly calendar last week, meeting on five separate occasions over an eight-day span as part of its efforts to finalize the 2022-’23 budget.

Eastland Park development reviewed by council

City leaders opened their weekly business on a bittersweet note, bidding farewell to longtime Tim Royse at his final meeting as a council member. Royse had been a fixture on the council and at local events over his time in the city, serving as a volunteer in various roles at Terrell ISD before taking a position on the Terrell Park Board for two years.

I-20 fatality incident under investigation

Traffic eastbound along Interstate 20 in Kaufman County was brought to a standstill following a fatality incident involving a box truck July 26. According to preliminary information made available by the Texas Department of Public Safety, a box truck was traveling eastbound just west of FM 429 just before 5 p.m.
