Flanked by city and school dignitaries, family, friends and well-wishers, school Trustee Tonya Derrick snips the ceremonial ribbon as the Terrell ISD on Oct. 15 dedicated its Multipurpose Center to the memory of Tonya’s brother, Bernard Derrick. On Sept. 7, 1977, the young Terrell High football player tragically lost his life when he was struck by lightning on the practice field. His death raised awareness about the dangers of lightning for high school- and college-level athletic programs across the nation. Civic Auction expected to meet fundraising goal

After going virtual in 2020, the 40th annual Terrell Civic Auction was back live last Saturday night as hundreds arrived at the city-owned airplane hangar on Airport Road to enjoy an evening of food, raffles and auctioneering.

The Terrell ISD rolled out the red carpet to the local community last week, hosting a special event highlighting Hispanic art, heritage and culture at the Jamie Foxx Performing Arts Center Oct. 14.

Leon Vineyard Field dedicated

Tribute was paid to the late Leon Vineyard on Oct. 15 during a field dedication ceremony at Memorial Stadium. Leon Vineyard Field is now the official name of the stadium’s gridiron. The ceremony was held in conjunction with the district’s annual Athletic Hall of Fame ceremonies. Vineyard led Terrell High School to state championships in 1952 and 1957. A premier college athlete who starred in football and basketball at North College Teachers College, Vineyard coached football in Terrell from 1948 to 1968. He continued teaching in Terrell until 1983. Vineyard died in 2004. His family and school officials are pictured here. COURTESY PHOTO

Terrell runners make history

The THS Cross Country team had an outstanding weekend at the District 12-4A Meet, qualifying multiple runners for the Regional Cross Country Meet. The boys team made Terrell High School history by finishing second overall.

City of Terrell offering Pfizer boosters

The City of Terrell is now offering Pfizer booster shots for adults 18 and older in certain groups who have received two doses of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine. The booster shots are available from 8 a.m. to noon Wednesdays at the Terrell Municipal Airport, 400 E. BFTS Blvd.

Council OKs TPD salary increase

Terrell City Council on Tuesday voted to approve an increase in pay for entry level through captain ranks of Terrell Police officers, effective Jan 1, 2022. “As Terrell continues to grow, the safety and protection of our citizens must remain our top priority,” said Mayor Rick Carmona.

Terrell PD, DEA partnering to prevent pill abuse

On Saturday, Oct. 23, from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m., the Terrell Police Department and the Drug Enforcement Agency will give the public its 21st opportunity in eight years to prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous, expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs.
