sports@terrelltribune.com The Terrell Lady Tigers opened the new soccer year in thrilling fashion last week, weathering a strong effort by North Forney to score a 5-4 win. Terrell got on the board early, pushing across a goal in the fourth minute courtesy of Maya Esquivel.

The Terrell Tigers made the leap to the 5A classification during the 2022 season, squaring off against a pool of talented opponents in the newly formed District 7-5A that also includes Melissa, Lovejoy, Crandall, Denison, Poteet, Greenville and Princeton.

The Terrell Lady Tigers delivered a strong opening statement this week, opening District 14-5A play with a 62-16 demolition of the Forney Lady Jackrabbits. Terrell essentially put the game out of reach during the first eight minutes of play, racing out to a commanding 14-3 rebounds (42-25), more assists (16-2), more steals (22-8) and more blocks (4-2).

The 2022-’23 basketball season was scheduled to hit another gear this week with both the Terrell Tigers and Terrell Lady Tigers set to compete in Royse City’s annual Craig Bowers Invitational Tournament Dec. 1-3.

The Terrell Tigers were a team on a mission during the final weeks of district play and opening weeks of the postseason, ripping off four consecutive wins including routs of Mesquite Poteet, Greenville and Everman, and a gutty overtime win over Texas High.

The Terrell Tigers have been a team on a mission in recent weeks, closing district play with a flourish before upsetting Texas High in the bi-district round of the playoffs Nov. 11.

The Terrell volleyball program experienced expected growing pains throughout the 2022 season, routinely hitting the court against programs that have been part of the 5A landscape for years. That inconsistency carried over into District 14-5A play where the Lady Tigers were paired with a slate of talented opponents that included Forney, Red Oak, Lancaster, Crandall, Ennis and Corsicana.
