Bates promoted to colonel

Army Lt. Col. Chad E. Bates, son of Wayne and Shary Bates of Terrell, recently was promoted to colonel by Gen. Stephen Fogarty, commander of the U.S. Army’s Cyber Warfare Command Center at Fort Belvoir in Virginia. Wayne and Shary, pictured here with their son, flew to Virginia to take part in the ceremony. Chad Bates is a graduate of West Point and has two masters degrees and a PhD in geoinformation sciences from George Mason. He served in Kosovo and Iraq and received a Bronze Star and several others medals over 25 years of service to the nation. He most recently was awarded the Global War on Terrorism Medal. Lt. Col. Bates has been involved in cyber warfare for many years and plans to be stationed at the Pentagon. He and his wife, Rebbeca, have four children. Big crowds flock to Jubilee

The Terrell Jubilee came back stronger than ever last week after COVID-19 KO’d the event a year ago. The festival’s 40th edition featured massive weekend crowds, brisk sales by vendors and fun by the boatload.

Juvenile detention center bid OK’d

The Kaufman County Commissioners Court on Tuesday awarded a consulting bid to HOK, an engineering and architecture company that will advise the county on possible construction of a new juvenile detention center.

Local COVID-19 infections stay level

In regard to COVID-19 vaccinations, the message coming out of Terrell city hall this week is that it’s never been easier to get vaccinated in Kaufman County. As of Tuesday, the Terrell Fire Department had administered roughly 29,000 COVID-19 vaccines, according to Dustin Connor, the city’s coordinator for Emergency Management.

Terrell city employees to receive pay increase

The Terrell City Council on Tuesday night voted 3-1 to give city employees a 2.5% raise in May as well as a 2.5% pay boost in September. The action will impact about half the city’s workforce because police and firefighters, who are civil service employees, received an across-the-board 4% raise with passage last fall of the fiscal 2021 budget.

Bobbie Mae Roycroft Williamson, passed away to the presence of the Lord on Friday, April 16, 2021 in Terrell, Tx. Bobbie was born October 8, 1928 in Elmo to Robert McKinley and Hazel Mae (Samples) Roycroft, both of whom preceded her in death along with her beloved husband, James M. Williamson, wonderful step-father, L.O. Meador, her son-in-law, Richard Crow, brother, Kenneth Roycroft and sister, Amanda Jane Koets.

Tigers soccer teams recognized by school board

The Terrell ISD school board Monday night recognized the achievements of the Terrell High School boys and girls varsity soccer teams. The Lady Tigers finished the season 12-8-4 with another post-season appearance. The girls also finished second in district with a 10-3-1 record. Girls individual award winners include Defensive Mid of the Year: Shelbie Stephens; Newcomer of the Year, Stephanie Hernandez; and District MVP, Jocelyne Mendoza. Girls First Team All-District includes Jocelyne Mendoza, Shelbie Stephens, Stephanie Hernandez, Jesseyla Vargas, Abigail Aguilar, Mariah Ventura, and Karla Landa. Second Team-All District includes Leslie Romero, Karina Lugo, Aaliyah Haslip and Princess Saballero. Honorable Mention includes Paola Herrera and Evelyn Ramirez. The Tigers boys team, which was ranked among the best teams in the state, finished the year 24-3 overall and captured the district crown with a 13-1 record. They made a nice playoff run before stumbling in the regional play. Boys individual awards include Newcomer of the Year, Jason Ramirez; Utility Player of the Year, Nathan Bautista; District MVP, Bryan Riojas; and Offensive Player of the Year, Crispen Muambila. First Team All-District includes Bryan Riojas, Nathan Bautista, Crispen Maumbila, Jason Ramirez, Alli Primero, Oscar Saucedo, Brian McCubbins, Omar Trejo and Gren Animas. Second Team All-District includes Andrew Navarrette, Gary San Miguel, Michael Torres, Lois Vargas and Edgard Salaz. Honorable Mention includes Brantony Campos and Nahum Hurtado.
