Extension of emergency SNAP benefits announced

Governor Greg Abbott announced the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) is providing more than $305.5 million in emergency Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) food benefits for the month of August.

The Terrell Fire Department recognized one of its own last week, celebrating the work of Captain Cindy Main upon her last shift. In a post on the Terrell FD Facebook page, coworkers noted, “Captain Main has served our great citizens of Terrell for over 28 years. Captain Main started her career in the fire service with Terrell’s Volunteer Fire Department. She served Terrell as a volunteer until she was hired with the Terrell Fire Department in 1999. “As a member of the Terrell Fire Department, Cindy rose to the rank of Captain where she led, inspired, trained and grew the members under her command. Little relief in sight for local departments

Fire departments across the state continued to echo a familiar refrain last week, warning of dangerous drought conditions that could cause fires spiral out of control quickly. Departments have been tested time and time again throughout the summer, crisscrossing both Kaufman County while also offering mutual aid to neighboring communities.

Three fires break out due to burning trailer

Approximately nine homes along County Road 151, and 151A near the City of Kaufman were evacuated shortly after noon July 31 as a precaution as three separate fires broke out. Witnesses reported that a vehicle pulling a burning trailer left a path of destruction behind before unlatching and abandoning the burning trailer on a bridge.

Rogers becomes Lone Star FFA degree recipient

Lauren Rogers’ day begins at 5 a.m. By 6:30 a.m. she arrives at the Terrell High School Ag Barn to care for and feed her show steer before heading to class at 7:30 a.m. After school, she heads back to the barn where she cleans stalls, walks her steer, and practices for an upcoming show.

Abbott directs coordinated state response to wildfi re conditions

Governor Greg Abbott encouraged Texans to remain vigilant during increased wildfire activity this week as the State of Texas continues ongoing coordinated wildfire response efforts through the Texas Division of Emergency Management (TDEM). Critical fire danger and widespread drought conditions have resulted in multiple wildfires continuing to burn across Texas, including the Chalk Mountain Fire in Somervell County and the 1148 Fire in Palo Pinto County. Both fires have caused local officials to issue voluntary evacuation orders for residents.

Blood drive set for Aug. 5 at Film Alley

More than 15-million pints of blood are transfused in this country each year. That exceeds 40,000 pints daily. Hospitals in north, central and east Texas are using only a fraction of that amount, but Carter Blood-Care still requests 1,000 volunteer blood donors each day to keep pace with local hospital demands.

Red Cross provides tips for managing extreme heat

Triple-digit temperatures are forecast throughout the week for North Texas, with temperatures on Wednesday climbing to near-record levels, according to the National Weather Service. To help keep everyone safe during this latest heatwave, the American Red Cross is urging people to use caution and follow our heat safety tips.
