JAPAN SURRENDERS TO END WORLD WAR II

Body
After the atomic bomb strikes on Japan in early August 1945, followed by Russian forces attacking the Japanese army in Manchuria, the Japanese government, finally, signaled its willingness to surrender on Aug. 10, 1945. On Aug. 14, the Emperor of Japan announced the intention to surrender via a radio broadcast to the country on Aug. 15. A formal surrender ceremony was held on the deck of the battleship Missouri in Tokyo Bay on Sept. 2, 1945. The photo at left shows Admiral Chester Nimitz and General Douglas MacArthur (photo courtesy of the Collection of Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, U.S. Naval History and Heritage Command) while the photo at right captures the moment Douglas MacArthur signs the surrender document (photo from the Army Signal Corps Collection in the U.S. National Archives). We appreciate the support of The Terrell Tribune for their participation in this 80th anniversary of the end of World War II project.
