City of Terrell maintenance crews were working on a fire hydrant near Mira Pl. on the afternoon of April 27 when Crew Leader Sam Karnes took a break to get some water. At some point, Karnes began choking on a plastic ring from his water bottle. When Maintenance Worker Jonathan Guinn, who has a military background and training, saw Sam was struggling to breathe, he jumped off the back of the truck and began giving Sam the Heimlich maneuver. The maneuver was successful at dislodging the plastic ring, allowing Sam to breathe again. Jonathan's quick thinking was able to save the life of his fellow crew member.
