East Texas continues to see more frequent severe weather like floods and tornadoes threatening our communities, as people everywhere are feeling the impacts of climate change. September is National Preparedness Month and the American Red Cross, East Texas Chapter, urges everyone to get ready for these emergencies now.

Texas A&M Forest Service is accepting applications for grants to help eligible Texas property owners with the cost of prescribed burning on their land. The grants will reimburse landowners to offset the cost of having a prescribed burn conducted on their property by certified and insured prescribed burn managers.

Texas Secretary of State John Scott encouraged interested Texans to get involved with the election process at the local level by learning how to become a poll worker for the upcoming November 8 General Election. The Texas Secretary of State’s Online Poll Worker Training program offers Texas voters the opportunity to serve as an Election Judge or Clerk in their county of registration. Additionally, Texas students who are at least 16 years of age can volunteer to serve as Student Election Clerks.

Average gasoline prices in Texas have fallen 13.6 cents per gallon in the last week, averaging $3.10/g Sept. 12, according to GasBuddy's survey of 13,114 stations in Texas. Prices in Texas are 34.4 cents per gallon lower than a month ago and stand 28.7 cents per gallon higher than a year ago. The national average price of diesel has declined 5.5 cents in the last week and stands at $5.01 per gallon.

I’ve found the older I get, the more frequently this occurs. I can spent a minute visiting with a total stranger and usually determine if he or she is a lover of the great outdoors. When I do ‘connect’ with a like-minded person, the talk and stories of past outings usually come fast and furious!
