Flanked by city and school dignitaries, family, friends and well-wishers, school Trustee Tonya Derrick snips the ceremonial ribbon as the Terrell ISD on Oct. 15 dedicated its Multipurpose Center to the memory of Tonya’s brother, Bernard Derrick. On Sept. 7, 1977, the young Terrell High football player tragically lost his life when he was struck by lightning on the practice field. His death raised awareness about the dangers of lightning for high school- and college-level athletic programs across the nation. The Multipurpose Center, which provides a safe practice facility for student athletes, was renamed the Bernard Derrick Multipurpose Center. COURTESY PHOTO
